On November 5th, America's West Walnut Creek office volunteered at the Contra Costa Foodbank, finding the experience both eye-opening and rewarding. With recent cuts to SNAP and EBT assistance, many local families face increased food insecurity, and the foodbank has stepped up to provide crucial support, including helping unpaid TSA workers at the Oakland airport. This post highlights our volunteer night, the foodbank's vital role, and the impact of community efforts.

The Urgent Need for Food Assistance
The disappearance of programs like SNAP and EBT has left many families struggling to access nutritious meals, making foodbanks essential. Contra Costa Foodbank has increased its distribution efforts, providing food to families and TSA workers at Oakland airport affected by labor disputes, highlighting the widespread impact of food insecurity.
How the Foodbank Operates
The foodbank runs a production line system to efficiently assemble food boxes. Each box contains a variety of food products designed to provide balanced nutrition for a family. Last night, our volunteer group helped assemble 1,000 of these boxes.
The process involves several steps:
Sorting donated food items by type and expiration date
Packing boxes with staple foods such as rice, beans, canned vegetables, and proteins
Labeling and stacking boxes for distribution
This assembly line approach allows the foodbank to prepare large quantities of food quickly and safely.
Our Volunteer Experience
Volunteering at the foodbank was a hands-on way to support the community, with an energetic atmosphere and essential teamwork to keep the production line moving smoothly.
Some highlights from the night included:
Meeting other volunteers who share a commitment to helping others
Seeing firsthand how donations turn into tangible support for families
Understanding the scale of need in our local area
The experience also brought awareness to the challenges faced by food-insecure families and the importance of community support.
Why Community Support Matters
Foodbanks rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Without community involvement, they cannot meet the demand. Volunteering not only helps with the physical work but also raises awareness about food insecurity.
Here are ways individuals and groups can contribute:
Volunteer time to help sort and pack food
Donate non-perishable food items or funds
Spread the word about local food assistance programs
Support policies that strengthen food security
Every action counts and helps build a stronger, more resilient community.
Supporting TSA Workers and Other Affected Groups
The foodbank supports TSA workers at Oakland airport, an often-overlooked group facing food insecurity, by providing essential food assistance during unpaid periods. This responsive approach ensures aid reaches those in critical need.
